Chae-Ok wants to meet with the King to beg for Yoon and Commander Jo's life. Baek Jo-Wan calls her crazy, saying that it is very dangerous to meet with the King. Won-Hae tells her meeting with the King is possible, if she's a ghost.

Chae-Ok writes a letter to Yoon.

"Sir, I met you for the first time when I was seven. I was still a child and don't fully understand the meaning of sadness, despite after the death of my father, and being separated from my mother and brother. On that day, you carried me on your back in the rain. After that day, you became my father, mother and brother. All the times I've spent with you are all the memories I have of this life. If I lose you, how could I continue living? My Lord, just like you said, I should not have gone to the mountain camp in the first place. If I had not gone, I would not have met the rebel leader. Your life was at stake, but I could not kill that man. I don't understand it, and it pains me more than dying. The only thing I can do is this. This stupid girl, will die like this. I wish for you to reach your goals in life. Young master, the destined metting we had please, forget it."

 Chae-Ok sneaks in the the palace. Chae-Ok manages to see the King but was attacked by heavily skilled guards. She was brought before the King, who asks for her identity. She tells the King that she is a damo. She told the King to pardon Yoon and Commander Jo since they are innocent. The King permits her to speak further, and she tells everything she has uncovered about the rebels and the conspiracy.

Byung-Taek demans to know about the whereabouts of Chae-Ok from Baek Jo-wan and Won-Hae, which resulted in a small fight since Byung-Taek pulled rank on them. Ta Bak-Nyu and Ma-Chook-Ji found Chae-Ok, injured and dying. They bring her to Won-Hae and others. Chae-Ok managed to tell them that she has met with the King before fainting.

The King consults his secret agent on what to do. The agent tells the King that Commander Jo and Yoon are good officers, and furthermore Commander Jo has lost his only son with the rebels. A doctor takes a look at Chae-Ok but says he cannot save her. Won-Hae demands the doctor to find a way. The King's agent summons Yoon and Commander Jo with a letter from the King. Yoon asks why, and the agent mentions Chae-Ok. The letter contains the pardon from the King. The other officials express their disapproval of the King's pardon, but the King was firm on his decision. Yoon returns to the police station to find Chae-Ok in that state. Yoon tries to solicit the help of the King's doctor, but rejects his request. Yoon points his sword at the doctor and forced him to examine Chae-Ok. The Royal doctor is also unable to do anything to save Chae-Ok. Yoon takes Chae-Ok to the temple where they grew up. Commander Jo is very angry at Yoon's disapperance. He orders his men to look for Sung-Baek's trails.

At the forest near the mountain camp, Won-Hae leaves his troops for a while to pay his respects where the soldiers were killed. He sees several rebels in the forest, and starts to trail them. He discovers the leper village, where they are making weapons at their forge. Won-Hae reports back his findings to Commander Jo. Commander Jo sends troops to capture the people in the village. A spy warns Choi of the movement of the police. Cho goes to see his superior, who is revealed to be Judge Jung Pil-Joon. Jung Pil-Joon orders Japanese warriors to kill everyone in the leper village so they can't be questioned by the police. The police found everyone dead upon arriving at the scene, so they left. When Jang Sung-Baek arrived at the village, he was mortified to find everyone dead and angry with the police. Soo-Myung sees a knife left by the killers and gives it to Sung-Baek. Sung-Baek realizes the knife is foreign, he thinks that maybe Choi and his superior are the ones behind the massacre. He sees Choi and demands to see his superior. Yoon uses all his strength to heal Chae-Ok. He sees the letter written by Chae-Ok and weeps. He tells to an unsconscious Chae-Ok, that she cannot die like this, not when he haven't told her his feelings yet. Judge Jung Pil-Joon meets with Sung-Baek, and starts to tell him how sorry he was about the tragedy. Sung-Baek told him it was not done by the police. One of the Japanese warriors sacrifices himself to trick Sung-Baek into believing that they weren't behind the massacre. Judge Jung tells Sung-Baek to hide as he will take care of everything from now on, and Sung-Baek refuses.

At the temple, the old master sees no sign of recovery from Chae-Ok, tells Yoon that he must "kill" Chae-Ok. By killing her, hopefully the force of the strike would be enough to wake her up. Yoon uses all his strength to "kill" Chae-Ok.

Scholar Ahn informs Commander Jo about General Jung's suicide. The King receives the General's last letter, which was written with his blood. The King is very upset, as he considers the General as one of his most loyal to him. Commander Jo and Yoon are captured and placed in a jail. Chae-Ok sees Yoon being taken away. Chae-Ok blames herself for the capture of Yoon and Commander Jo.

Jo Chi-Oh visits his father in the jail. Commander Jo tells his son not to do anything, and just focus on his work. Jo Chi-Oh persuades him to let him find a way to save his father, but Commander Jo ordered him to leave. Jo Chi Oh bows to his father and says that when his father is released, he would like for him to live with his family (wife and child).

At the police station, Jo Chi-Oh begins to prepare to raid the rebel mountain camp. He goes to Chae-Ok's room, and orders Chae-Ok to snap out of her misery.

Upon arriving at the rebel camp, Chae-Ok volunteers to go first to check out the situation. She finds the camp empty, and stops in front of Sung-Baek's room. Sung-Baek, still inside his room, invites Chae-Ok in. Chae-Ok tells him she plans to kill him, and she is a damo. Sung-Baek reminder her that he told her to forget the past. He was just waiting for her to return, so they can go together. Chae-Ok draws her sword and points it at Sung-Baek. Sung-Baek provokes Chae-Ok to kill him. They fight, and Sung-Baek gained the upperhand. Sung-Baek told her that he really wished to live with her together for a long time. He is just a citizen, who wants to make the world liveable.If they meet again, he hopes that they will meet in a world where they don't have to point swords at each other. He leaves, but Won-Hae and his men are waiting outside. Sung-Baek manages to escape.

Chae-Ok comes out of the room and informs them that the camp is empty. Jo Chi-Oh arrives and learns of the situation, and orders his men to go after the rebel's trails. While the other police men are searching for the rebels, Chae-Ok, Won-Hae and Baek Jo-Wan look for Ma Chook Ji. He found him tied up with firecrackers in the forge. They managed to save him, but Ma Chook Ji is so scared, that his mind doesn't seem to be in the right place. The other police men fall into the traps that the rebels made. Jo Chi-Oh's team search for the rebels in the river, where a trap was also laid out for them. Just as when Jo Chi-Oh was the only last man standing, the other rebels appear. Jo Chi-Oh and Sung-Baek exchange swords. Chae-Ok, Won-Hae and Baek Jo-Wan was aghast to find dead bodies of the police everywhere. They see Jo-Chi Oh fighting with Sung-Baek. Won-Hae was so angry he wants to come down and kill the rebels, but knowing this is a futile attempt, Chae-Ok knocks him unconscious. She and Baek Jo-Wan saw Sung-Baek kill Jo Chi-Oh.

At the capital, the families of the deceased weep at the funeral. Commander Jo, probably given permission to attend the funeral, arrive there bound with police escort. Commander Jo apoligized to everyone, saying it was his sons fault for risking the lives of so many police/soldiers. Lady Nan-Hee and Jo Chi-Oh's wife was very upset at his words. As Commander Jo leaves, Lady Nan-Hee confronts him and tells him how could he say that infront of his daugher in law and grandson. Commander Jo says that although Jo Chi-Oh was his son, he was also a general responsible for the lives of many. As Commander Jo starts to walk away, he silently apoligizes to his son, and promises that when they meet again, he will treat him as his son foremost. Then he collapsed.

Outside a high official's residence, Chae-Ok begs for an audience so the General can spare Yoon and Commander Jo's lives. Chae-Ok was shooed away. Lady Nan-Hee saw her and comforts Chae-Ok. Chae-Ok has not given up hope, and sends a letter to Yoon via the boy who delivers food to prison, to tell Yoon that he'll find a way to save him. Yoon relayed a message, to tell Chae-Ok to stop trying. Chae-Ok weeps as she heard the message. Chae-Ok tells (a seemingly okay) Ma Chook Ji and Ta Bak Nyu to leave and pursue a new life. Apparently, Yoon has lifted their slave status and are now commoners. They weep with gratitude. Chae-Ok asks Won-Hae and Baek Jo-Wan how can she meet with the King.

Damo Episode 7 Synopsis

Chae-Ok gets shot and falls off the horse. She gets surrounded by soldiers riding horses. She begins to tell them that she is a damo, but the soldiers cut her off. Sung-Baek rides toward Chae-Ok and sweeps her off the ground.

Yoon is dreaming of Chae-Ok being in danger, as Lady Nan-Hee wipes sweat off his forehead. Yoon wakes up, and Lady Nan-Hee tells him he must have dreamt a terrible nightmare. Yoon has fever, and Lady Nan-Hee asks him to drink medicine. Yoon tells her he's fine. Lady Nan-Hee asks him if she should throw away the medicine as well. Yoon asks her why is she being like this. Lady Nan-Hee tells him why does he treat her this way. If he hates her, she will stop coming. Yoon was about to tell something but Lady Nan-Hee interrupts him and begs him to drink the medicine. Yoon grabs the medicine and throws the cup away, asking her if she is satisfied now. Yoon gets dressed and leaves, leaving Lady Nan-Hee sobbing alone. Yoon goes to the police station and asks to see Baek Ji-wan. Jo Chi-Oh tells him it's not a good idea and orders him to leave.

At the rebel's camp, Sung-Baek brings back a severely wounded Chae-Ok. Ma Chook-Ji cries out to Chae-Ok, and Sung-Baek orders him to leave the room. Ma Chook-Ji meets up with Won-Hae to tell him about Chae-Ok being fatally injured. Won-Hae gives Ma Chook-Ji a firecracker to use as a signal if Chae-Ok dies. Sung-Baek undresses Chae-Ok to tend to her wounds, Chae-Ok wakes up. Sung-Baek tells her the bullet must be taken out, and tells Chae-Ok to bite into a cloth to keep her from screaming. Chae-Ok declines, and Sung-Baek cuts the bullet out with a knife. Sung-Baek asks her what causes her to keep silent through the pain. As Sung-Baek turns to leave, Chae-Ok thanks him, and tells him she lived as though the world hates her, and she was mute. And she will continue to live that way in the future. Sung-Baek tells her to rest and leaves. Outside, Ma Chook-Ji inquires about Chae-Ok. Sung-Baek assures him she will be okay. Ma Chook-Ji rejoices and enters their room, while Sung-Baek opens his palm to look at the bullet he removed from Chae-Ok.

Yoon gets a letter from Won-Hae, delivered by Baek Ji-Wan. He realizes Chae-Ok's situation, and regrets having send her. He was about to leave when Commander Jo stops Yoon, telling him to wait for 4 more days. Yoon wants to go see Chae-Ok. Commander Jo tells him not to behave like this because this case is for the sake of the nation. Commander Jo leaves, with Yoon visibly pained from not being able to go to Chae-Ok. Baek Ji-Wan tells him to go and he will bear the responsibility. Yoon thanks him and leaves.

Chae-Ok is feeling better, and steps outside her room. Sung-Baek sees her, and asks her if she's bored. Chae-Ok nods. Sung-Baek tells her there is a place where his people rests. Chae-Ok is brought to a place with many people, fishing, washing clothes, children playing. While in there, the rebels got the news that Hwang Bo Yoon has left his post. Chae-ok got disturbed by the news and excuses herself from the group. Chae-Ok packs her belongings so she can find out more about Yoon's situation, and orders Ma Chook Ji to stay in the mountain to make an excuse for her absence. As she was walking, she sees Sung-Baek giving a man a letter that seems important. After Sung-Baek left, Chae-Ok confronted the messenger to retrieve the message. Soo-Myung the appears and starts to fight with Chae-Ok. She is gaining the upperhand when Yoon came out of nowhere and saved Chae-Ok. Soo-Myung is severely injured but manages to escape.

As Yoon tends to Chae-Ok's wounds, Chae-Ok told him about the situation here. Yoon ignores her and continues to ask her if her bullet wound is fine. Yoon then tells her that he shouldn't have let her go, and he can handle anything but Chae-Ok being in danger. Chae-Ok starts to cry.

Soo-Myung returns to Sung-Baek. Sung-Baek scolds her for interfering, as he has it all under control. Soo-Myung informs him that Yoon is here on the mountains. Sung-Baek tells her it's none of her business, when Soo-Myung faints.

Ta Bak Nyu is praying for her husband's safety. Yoon comes along carrying an injured Chae-Ok. Chae-Ok hands over the letter that she intercepted, and they found out that Sung-Baek is conspiring with General Jang Hong Ju (army official).

Back at the rebel camp, Ma Chook Ji tells Sung-Baek that Chae-Ok went down the mountain as it is her parent's death anniversary. Sung-Baek nods and pretend he doesn't know the real situation. Yoon and Chae-Ok report to Commander Jo about their findings. Commander Jo then plans to invite Jung Hong Ju over while Yoon and others can secretly raid Hong Ju's house for evidence. General Jung arrives at Commander Jo's house. They are close friends, so Commander Jo looks very grim. Meanwhile, Yoon and Chae-Ok found the counterfeit coin molds. Commander Jo presents the incriminating evidence against General Jung, and arrests the General.

At the jail, Commander Jo visit the General, who told him that he has been framed. The King, who trusts General Jung a lot, asks him about it. He told the King he is innocent. The King orders a through investigation. While Commander Jo and Yoon prepare for further investigation, Scholar Ahn arrives and announces that the General commited suicide. Everyone is shocked by the news.

Damo Episode 6 Synopsis

Ma Chook Ji and Chae-Ok tries to find evidence of counterfeit coins/counterfeit coin molds on the camp. They report to Won-Hae about their findings so far. Won-Hae tells them to be careful. Ma Chook Ji asks Won-Hae to take care of his wife. Chae-Ok gives Won-Hae a map of the rebel's camp. Ta-Bak Nyu entertains her guests at the tavern. Won-Hae (pretending to be Ta-Bak Nyu's brother), talks to her in private to assure her that her husband is still safe. Won Hae sends a message to the police station with the map given by Chae-Ok. 

Jo Chi Oh visits Commander Jo to tell him that he became the new manager of the Left Police Bureau (Yoon asked for a leave). Baek Ji-Wan has received the message from Won-Hae via bird messenger. Jo Chi-Oh sees Baek Ji-Wan with the letter but Baek Ji-Wan manages to avoid the subject and walk away. Baek tells Yoon of Jo Chi-Oh's new position, and the map sent by Won-Hae. 

Lady Nan-Hee stops by Yoon's house, bringing the warm clothing that she made. She told Yoon if he doesn't want to wear it, give it to someone else or tear it apart. 

At the police station, Jo Chi-Oh asks about Won-Hae and Chae-Ok's whereabouts, as they need as many hands as possible on the case. Baek Ji-Wan makes up an excuse for their absence. 

At the rebel camp, Sung Baek inspects the new guns developed by his comrades. Gak Chul gives Ma Chook Ji and Chae-Ok a proper tour of the rebel camp, but forbids them to go into the forge. Sung-Baek walks out and asks why they're here. Ma Chook Ji's tongue slip by saying he wanted to know what's in the forge. Sung-Baek invites them in, but Ma Chook Ji declines. Gak-Chul tells Sung-Baek about other mountain residents needing medical attention. Ma Chook-Ji volunteers to go, and drags Chae-Ok along. Turns out it was a small village of lepers. Ma Chook Ji avoids helping, but Chae-Ok tried hard to help out. Sung-Baek praised her for working hard, and Chae-OK returns his smile. A man returns to the village and talks with Sung-Baek. The man was the former servant of Jang Il Soon, the one who helped Jae-Mo/Sung-Baek escape. 

We are taken back 15 years before the incident. 

At the leper village, a monk was treating the villagers. The servant asks for refuge but when the monk told them only lepers can live here, the servant cuts his arm and wraps with it the bandage previously used by a leper. Jae-Mo tells to no one in particular that he doesn't want to live here. Seems like the monk knows Jae-Mo's father and takes them in. 

Back to the present, Sung-Baek is wondering if Jae-Hee is still alive. The servant told him she probably is. The servant brings out a sword covered in silk to Sung-Baek. It was from his father, who asked the servant to pass it to Jae-Mo when the time is right. Sung-Baek removes the silk wrap and unfurls a paper with the characters 'balmook' written on it. Chae-Ok sees the paper, and remembers the past. 

Yoon remembers his happy memories with Chae-Ok when he is interrupted by visitors. He is being summonned by Army General Jung Hong-Du. Yoon visits the general, and has a duel with one of the general's men who was curious about Yoon's famed skills. In private, the general asks for Yoon's help to train an elite army team. 

At the rebel camp, Ma Chook Ji makes a scene by pooping near the forge to distract the rebel guards while Chae-Ok sneaks inside. She doesn't found amiss on the forge. Afterwards, Chae-Ok sits outside and remembers Sung-Baek's words to forget her past and live in the mountains with him. Chae-Ok writes the words 'balmook' on the dirt with a stick. Sung-Baek sees her and asks her if she's drawn with those characters, and asks her who taught her this. Chae-Ok writes 'father' on the dirt. Sung-Baek asks where is her father, to which Chae-Ok writes 'death'. Sung-Baek apoligizes for asking that question. Chae-Ok writes 'father lives?', and Sung-Baek tells her yes. Chae-Ok leaves, and Sung-Baek tells himself that yes, his father is alive inside his heart. In their room, Ma Chook Ji teases Chae-Ok if she's thinking about Sung-Baek. 

The next day, Sung-Baek and the other rebels are informed of a local officer who abuses the citizens. They plan to attack, and asks Chae-Ok to come but Ma Chook-Ji to stay. Chae-Ok tells Ma Chook-Ji to investigate Sung-Baek's room while they're away. The rebels successfully rescue the oppressed citizens and capture the officer. The officer begs his life to be spared, but Sung-Baek kills him. Sung-Baek tells the officer to be born as a kind citizen in the next life. Soldiers have arrived, and the rebels escape. Chae-Ok gets shot, and they were about to leave her, but Sung-Baek sees Chae-Ok fell from her horse, on the beach surrounded by soldiers. He remembers Jae-Hee and turns his horse around towards Chae-Ok.

Damo Episode 5 Synopsis

A masked Chae-Ok helped Ma Chook Ji and Gak-Chul escape. Jang Sung Baek study the situation in the prison while hidden. Yoon orders gunfire toward Chae-Ok and the jailbreakers. The rebel group swoops down from the rooftop to enable the jailbreakers to escape, surprising Yoon. Chae-Ok helps fight off the other police. They manage to escape and meet up with Magistrate Choi. Gak-Chul is angry at Choi for wanting to poison him. Choi states it was an order from a higher authority. Sung-Baek tells him that his men's lives are in his hands. Choi asks about the identity of Ma Chook Ji and Chae-Ok, and asks Chae-Ok to remove the mask. Sung-Baek is shocked to see Chae-Ok but doesn't give her identity away. A suspicious Choi aims his gun at Chae-Ok, but Sung-Baek stops him in time. Soo-Myung, heavily injured, waits at Choi's room. Choi, upon arrival, was shocked to see her in this state. 

At the King's palace, the other officers ridicule Commander Jo for having lax security at the prisoner. Commander Jo has a private audience with the King, telling the King to wait half a month and he will capture the rebels. 

Sung-Baek tells Ma Chook Ji and Chae-Ok to leave. Chae-Ok, pretending to be male and mute, turns around to leave. Gak-Chul asks Sung-Baek to reconsider but he refuses. At the riverside, as Sung-Baek and Gak-Chul about to board a boat, police officers with the sketch of the two jailbreakers arrive to investigate the passengers. Just as the officers are about to inspect Gak-Chul, Ma Chook Ji steals someones bag and runs away to create a diversion. Chae-Ok, who was hiding under the port bridge jumps up to save Sung-Baek and Gak-Chul. The four of them managed to escape together. They drop off Sung-Baek and Gak-Chul somewhere and gets ready to leave when Sung-Baek calls out to them. 

Byung-Taek goes through a series of tests to become a police offer. Having failed every single one of the physical tests (like archery, martial arts, etc.), Byung-Taek begs for another chance. He astonishes the officer in charge with his deep knowledge. As Yoon looks over while his men are practicing their sword and fight skills, he thinks of Chae-Ok. Commander Jo summonned Yoon to ask him what he thinks of his daughter. 

At the rebel camp, Gak-Chul reunites with his daughter. Chae-Ok and Ma Chook Ji watch from afar, with the latter visibly touched. Won-Hae watches everything from afar. 

Scholar Ahn dotes on his son's success in becoming an officer. Byung-Taek talks down to Vice-Commander Baek Jo-Won (since he outranks him), and asks about Chae-Ok's whereabouts. Baek Jo-Won tells him she left for an assignment. 

At the rebel camp, Jang Sung-Baek is greeted by numerous rebels who kneel at his return. Chae-Ok and Ma Chook Ji realizes that this is not an ordinary band of rebels. 

Yoon goes to see Commander Jo to ask him to grant him leave to visit his mother. Commander Jo refused. As Yoon leaves, he saw Lady Nan-Hee, who has sewn more cotton on his uniform. Lady Nan-Hee told him to wear the warmer clothing that she made. Yoon told her the cold is still bearable. Lady Nan-Hee is worried about Yoon's health, and Yoon tells her she doesn't need to. Yoon visits Chae-Ok's room at the police station. He remembers her words before their parting, and touches her blanket. 

At the rebel's camp, while having a feast Chae-Ok and Ma Chook Ji were asked to drink strong wine, as they thank the two for saving Gak-Chul. Chae-Ok has drank several cups, which amazed the rebels. One of the rebels, Duk-Soo challenge Chae-Ok to target shooting when Sung-Baek told him Chae-Ok is better than Duk-Soo. Duk-Soo shoots darts with Gak-Chool standing at the target. Meanwhile, Chae-Ok who's vision is blurry from the alchohol, no one volunteers to stand at the target first. Sung Baek volunteers to go, and Chae-Ok throws her knives. Everyone was amazed with her skills. After everyone has left, Sung-Baek returns the knives to Chae-Ok, and thanks her for saving his life. Chae-Ok realizes that one of the knives has blood on it (it grazed Sung-Baek's ear). Sung-Baek tells her, whatever the reason she came here for, it doesn't matter, as he wishes to live with her here in the mountains for a long time. Chae-Ok stares at Sung-Baek as he leaves, with a slight smile on her face.

Damo Episode 4 Synopsis

As Chae-Ok starts to leave the police station, Baek Jo-Wan calls after her trying to persuade her to stay. Chae-Ok thanks him for treating her like family. Baek Jo-Wan asks if she would like to stay with his family then. Chae-Ok thanks him and refuses. Won-Hae speaks with Yoon and tells him that Chae-Ok can only survive in the police station. Chae-Ok goes to a tavern and remembers her past spent with Yoon as she drinks wine.

At the prison, Jo Chi-Oh punishes the captured rebels. Yoon arrives asking him to stop. Then, Commander Jo arrives and orders his son to stop. Jo Chi Oh tells his father that this is no longer a police matter.

While drinking, Chae-Ok witnesses the hostess and her family getting bullied. Chae-Ok becomes increasingly angry, but remembers she can't interfere because she's no longer a damo. Unbeknownst to her, Yoon and Won-Hae are watching Chae-Ok behind the bush. Yoon throws the damo badge at Chae-Ok. Chae-Ok catches it, and stops the bullies.

At the police station, Chae-Ok begins to apoligize to Yoon interrupts her, and tells her how wonderful it is for them to be like this, and gently touches her face. Lady Nan-Hee sees the two of them.

Yoon, Chae-Ok, Baek, and Won-Hae discuss their plans toward the captured rebel. Ma Chook Ji, who became a slave of the police station since his capture, is called into the meeting with Yoon and Chae-Ok. He was asked to disguise as a prisoner, so he could win Noh-Gak-Chul's trust and infiltrate the rebels.

Commander Jo meets with his daughter to discuss possible marriage candidates. Lady Nan-Hee tells her father that she wants to marry someone like her father, and Hwang Bo Yoon is the one she loves. Chae-Ok overhears their conversation as she was about to bring tea to the room.

Meanwhile, in Jail, Ma Chook Ji is imprisoned (unbeknownst to everyone that he is on a disguised except by Chae-OK, Yoon, Baek, Won-Hae and Ta-Bak-Nyu) and creates an uproar that gets Gak-Chul's attention. Ma Chook Ji strikes up a conversation with Gak Chul. Yoon and the others scheme to have someone from the police force to 'save' Ma Chook Ji from prison so a formal police member together with Ma Chook Ji can spy on the rebels. Chae-Ok volunteers to go since the rebels have seen the others and know their faces.

Chae-Ok visits Scholar Ahn who wanted to see her. Scholar Ahn tells her that his son is his only hope and subtley hints about his worry about his sons affection to Chae-Ok. Chae-Ok assures him not to worry as she understands her place in the world. Scholar Ahn is visibly embarrassed and speechless, but nevertheless grateful. As Chae-Ok was on the way home, she runs into Byung-Taek, whom she challenges into a fight. If Byung-Taek manages to lay a sword on her, Chae-Ok will marry him. Otherwise, he must forget his feelings for her. Byung-Taek is reluctant as he senses something is wrong. Chae-Ok leaves.

At the police station, Chae-Ok paid a visit to Yoon to persuade him to allow her to infiltrate the rebels. Yoon dissaudes her, but Chae-Ok is firm. Chae-Ok told Yoon that she is still alive, thanks to him. Yoon hugs Chae-Ok, and tells her to go, but she must definitely return. The police and Ma Chook Ji plan a way for him to escape, by sending poisoned food on the guise that it was from Ga-Chul's comrades. Unbeknownst to them, Magistrate Choi has already secretly planned to send poisoned food to Gak-Chul in order to silence him. Gak-Chul, thinking that his comrades want to poison him gets angry. Ma Chook-Ji tells him about his plan to escape with the help of his comrade (Chae-Ok). Jang Sung-Baek and the other rebels arrive at the prison to save Gak-Chul. Chae-Ok helped Ma Chook Ji and Gak Chul escape prison, and together they join the rebels.

Yoon left, leaving Chae-Ok on the field. Lady Nan-Hee approaches Chae-Ok. Lady Nan-Hee tells her that what Yoon had did was for her sake, and she should apologize to him. Chae-Ok tells Nan-Hee to speed up her marriage with Yoon so she can finally rest at ease.

The police is notified of another murder case. The victim was one of the police and it was determined that the victim was poisoned. During the funeral, as Chae-Ok was about to burn the last clothes worn by the victim, she found out something strange. The corpse was found on a mountain but there was a fish odor and salty taste on his shoes. The police was probably murdered on the nearest port to Mt. Ae-oh-gae and then dumped there. Chae-Ok borrowed ginseng roots from Byung-Taek to use as a bait to lure the murderers.

Chae-Ok and Officer Baek Jo-Wan disguised as merchants and set up a root stand. While other customers are ogling at the ginseng (the rare kind) a man carrying his ill mother asked for a root though he doesn't have enough money. The other customers begin to question if the roots are real. Sung-Baek (in disguise) pretends to be a blind root-expert and testified the roots are real. The potential customers were surprised and Sung-Baek steals a root and escapes (to give it to the man with an ill mother). Chae-Ok runs after them. The mother told his son to return the root. Chae-Ok offers to sell it for 1/100 of their asking price. Sung-Baek and Soo-Myung witness the scene, and Sung-Baek tells her that Chae-Ok is a damo. The suspects show up at Chae-Ok and Baek Jo-Wan's stand, and gives them a huge amount of money to order large quantities of the root.

Meanwhile, Sung-Baek met up with a fellow conspirator to discuss the rebellion. Trapped in an inn with the suspects surveiling them,  Baek Jo-Wan  wants to inform Yoon about their progress but Chae-Ok insists on them acting alone for now. They wait for the suspects till it was nighttime already. Chae-Ok asks  Baek Jo-Wan  if he could try to look for her brother and mother one more time.  Baek Jo-Wan  tells her to forget because he tried several times before and couldn't find them.  Baek Jo-Wan  sleeps, as Chae-Ok thinks of her past. Ma Chook Ji and Ta-bak-nyu arrive to steal money. They arrive at Chae-Ok's room, unbeknownst to them that it was Chae-Ok. Chae-Ok catches them and saw it's the same thief. Just then, the suspects arrive with their knives around them. Chae-Ok bluffs to the suspects and asks them to let his "brother" ( Baek Jo-Wan ) go and fetch more roots that they have in stock. Yoon was then informed of what happened to Chae-Ok.

While imprisoned in the suspect's hideout, Chae-Ok unbounds herself and looks around for clues on the murder. Chae-Ok was knocked unconscious by one of the suspects. The suspects hangs Chae-Ok by the tree to ask her identity. Chae-Ok doesn't budge and the leader ordered to kill Chae-Ok. One of the suspects decided to rape Chae-Ok first and unbounds her feet. Chae-Ok got free and killed the suspects. The police force arrived. Chae-Ok seizes the evidence for the rebellion, and Won-Hae passed it to Yoon. Yoon throws the evidence away and yells at them for acting without his permission. Chae-Ok tells him that they had no choice and had to act fast. Yoon suspends Chae-Ok from the police force. Chae-Ok gives Yoon her damo badge and states that indeed, she will. Yoon and the police force searched the town for suspects and captures an important rebel, Noh Gak-Chul. Back at the police station, Yoon asks Baek for Chae-Ok's badge. Yoon goes outside Chae-Ok's room and remembers their childhood days. Yoon asks Chae-Ok if she is inside her room. Chae-Ok was just packing her things and opened the door. Yoon tells her how when he was younger, people called him bastard more often than his name.. How he just addressed his father as "father" for the first time after 24 years he was born, then his father passed away. He had many regrets for not understanding his father's love. Yoon asks Chae-Ok if she has ever felt this way. Chae-Ok tells him she doesn't have a clue on what he's trying to say. Yoon further says that with half of him a noble, and half a slave, he did not feel like a person. Even though he wear clothes, speak the same language and ate the same as the people around him were, he was unlike his father and brother. No one allowed him to be himself, he was neither above or below a pig or a dog. Chae-Ok said that she was the one who is like a pig and a dog. Yoon asks her if she still remembers how she was when they first met 15 years ago. Yoon further tells that for that child, he couldn't do anything. Chae-Ok disagrees and tells him he did a lot for that child. Yoon tells her he wanted to see her live like a person, but when he tries to hold on to her she leaves. Why doesn't she understand the danger of acting alone, and he doesn't wish her to leave. Chae-Ok tells him she's sorry for not being able to assist him. Yoon tells her if she really is concerned for his sake, then she should just follow his lead in the future, and extends his hand to give Chae-Ok her badge. Chae-Ok doesn't wish to add more trouble to him, and would rather leave. Yoon tells her if she left it would be the end for the two of them. Chae-Ok starts to tell him that she would gladly leave if that will benefit him when Yoon cuts her off and tells her to leave if she insists. Chae-Ok went back inside her room to weep, while Yoon stands outside her room and holding back his tears. Sung-Baek then learns that one of his comrades has been captured by the police, and begins to plan a rescue operation. One of the conspirators with him, Magistrate Choi is strongly against it, saying that it would be better to sacrifice Noh-Gak-Chul. Sung-Baek strongly refused.

Chae-Ok's backpack containing the counterfeit coins was stolen. She tried to chase Ma Chook Ji but loses him. Jang Sung-Baek tries to catch the thief too, but also loses him. Chae-Ok thanks Sung-Baek for helping her. Sung-Baek tells her that the woman at the tavern and the thief are working together, and told her to give up because by now they would have fled the scene, and most likely passed the goods to a gang ring.
Chae-Ok goes back to the police station in hopes of finding out more about the identity of the thieves. Yoon finds out that Chae-Ok has returned to the police station but left again to pursue the thieves.

Meanwhile, Chae-Ok went to gang's hideout. Chae-Ok arrives at Ta Bak-Nyu and Ma Chook Ji's house seeing them counting the coins. The two of them run out to get help from their gang. Chae-Ok prepares to fight off the gang leader when Byung-Taek (son of a scholar that has feeling for Chae-Ok), who followed Chae-Ok into the gang's hideout fell off a tree. Chae-Ok and the gang exchange swords but Byung-Taek is held hostage. Chae-Ok is forced to drop her sword. The gang leader was about to kill her when Jang Sung-Baek arrives. Sung-Baek managed to fight off the gang but Chae-Ok pointed her sword at him and demanded to know who he is and why he is following her. Yoon and Wonhae arrives at the scene. Yoon exchanges sword with Sung-Baek. Chae-Ok tries to stop Yoon, until Sung-Baek stopped Yoon's sword by holding the blade, Chae-Ok finally got the chance to tell Yoon that Sung-Baek saved her. Yoon apologizes. Sung-Baek asks who he is, and Yoon introduces himself as the assistant commander of the Left Police Bureau. Sung-Baek tells him he is well known, and then looks at Chae-Ok to tell her she must be a damo. Yoon asks for Sung-Baek's identity but he leaves. Chae-Ok tries to stop him but to no avail. Yoon tells Chae-Ok that Sung-Baek's sword skill is not ordinary.

As they were about to go back to the police station, Chae-Ok asks Yoon to go ahead as she would like to dip her feet in the water first. Yoon tells her not to get sick. Chae-Ok takes a bath in the river as she remembers the past...

We are taken 15 years before, on 1679. In Hanyang City, on the house of Officer Jang Il-Soon (Chae-Ok's father). A group of soldiers are marching to the house of Jang Il-Soon to capture him and his family. Jang Il-Soon was accused of treason. While waiting for the soldiers to arrive, Jang Il-Soon writes the words 'balmook' (發墨) and asks Jae-Mo (Chae-Ok's brother) to tell him the meaning. Jae-Mo tells him it means to grind the ink on the block. Jang Il-Soon tells his son that he is not asking for the literal meaning, but rather the deeper meaning behind these words. When one puts all of his sincerity into grinding an ink block, the scent of ink, and pure ink will be created. And people are the same. Chae-Ok (Jae Hui) asks his father does a man who is sincere in everything smells like ink. His father asks her how old she is, and says sorry for not protecting her until the end. Jang Il-Soo then asks Jae-Mo to be with his sister no matter what. Finally, the soldiers has arrived at their house. Jae-Mo and Jae-Hui (Chae-Ok), along with a servant get on a horse to escape. Meanwhile, Jang Il-Soon commited suicide. The soldiers pursue the siblings, and as they both fall of the horse, Jae-Mo loses his grip on Jae-Hee with only her blue cloth tie on his hands. The servant and Jae-Mo are on a boat while Jae-Hee is left behind, surrounded by soldiers. Jae-Hee cries out to her brother.

Back on the river, Chae-Ok weeps as she remembers her past. She noticed Ma Chook Ji trying to take away her belongings on the shore. Chae-Ok comes out of the river to stop him. Together with his wife, they beg for Ma Chook Ji's life. Chae-Ok lets them go as they have promised to never steal again.

Chae-Ok returns to the police station. Yoon tells Chae-Ok to follow him. They went to a field and angrily orders Chae-Ok to exchange swords with him. Yoon asks Chae-Ok what does he mean to her and Chae-Ok tells him she thinks of him as the commander that she serves. Yoon angrily asks her is that is all he is to her, that from the beginning is he just a commander to her.

We are again taken back 15 years before the incident. Yoon was studying in class and gets praised by his teacher for his insights. Yoon got ridiculed by the class bully because Yoon is the son of a mistress. After class, Yoon agreed to stopped going to school, as long as his classmates agree to apologize for disrespecting their teacher earlier. The bully doesn't budge, so Yoon beat him up until he is bleeding. He was interrupted by a servant from his household, who just came from fetching their new servant. Yoon looks at the new young servant, a filthy looking girl with very blistered feet (which is Jae-Hee/Chae-Ok). Yoon was emotionally taken aback, and asked Jae-Hee to ride on his back. Yoon got punished by beating up the son of the noble man. Jae-Hee sneaks in to the kitchen at night to prepare honey water for Yoon. As she was leaving the honey water at the door of his room another servant saw her and scolded her for going into the kitchen. Yoon and Jae-Hee was sent to the mountains so Yoon can study from the monks. Yoon and Jae-Hee had a hard time in the mountains (due to training), but was overall happy in the company of each other. They grow up, and Yoon went down the mountain to visit his sick father. He was given a job at the Police Bureau, and he asked his father if he could bring Jae-Hee with her to the police station as a damo. His father gave his approval, on the condition that Yoon must not develop a personal relationship with Jae-Hee. Yoon agrees. Yoon went back to the mountain and the monk gave Jae-Hee a new name, Chae-Ok, meaning colorful marble.

Back to the present, Yoon asks Chae-Ok if she wishes to leave the police bureau. Chae-Ok doesn't understand what she has done wrong. Yoon scolds Chae-Ok for acting alone and tells her to leave the station if she continues to do so. Yoon prepares to leave as Lady Nan-Hee arrives at the scene. Yoon passes her by and leaves.

Damo Episode 1 Synopsis

The drama starts off with Chae-Ok and Sung Baek exchanging swords in a bamboo forest. Chae-Ok asks Sung Baek if he wants to kill her, and he replied, "I have already killed you." Their fighting commences, and Sung Baek managed to escape and run.

The next scene shows Sung Baek chased by the police led by Commander Jo. After being shot by an arrow,

Sung Baek falls off the horse and starts running. Commander Jo tells Sung Baek that everything is now over. Sung Baek told him that "The road you run upon is not a road.. A road that is not a road.. a road is not a road from the beginning.. one person travels on it.. then two people travel on it.. Many people travel it.. and that is how it becomes a road. In this dark world I have merely run toward a new road.

Commander Jo told him to stop this nonsense, and this would be the place where he will die. Sung Baek told him that indeed, he will die here today. But in the future many people will walk on the road that he took, and a new world will open. Even though he dies today, he will not fully die. He urges Commander Jo to hurry up and kill him. Commander Jo angrily shouts how dare he, the criminal, asks for death on his own terms. Chae-Ok steps forward and says if Sung Baek doesn't die from her sword, she would regret it for the rest of her life. Sung Baek tells here not to make any mistakes this time. Chae-Ok and Sung Baek begins to fight...

We are then taken one year before that incident (1693 a.d., 19th year of King Sook Jung of Joseon dynasty)

Chae-Ok serves tea that was prepared by Lady Jo Nan-Hee (Commander Jo's daugther) to Commander Jo and Hwang Bo Yoon. Won-Hae arrives to inform Commander Jo and Yoon about the sudden death of a townman's daughter-in-law. Won-Hae and Chae-Ok went at the scene to investigate. Chae-Ok discovers that it was a crime by one of the male slaves working at the household. After cleverly finding out the identity

of the perpetrator, Chae-Ok and Won-Hae was told by Yoon that they did a good job, but was angry at

Chae-Ok by putting herself at risk against the offender.

A polo match between the Left Police Bureau and the Right Police Bureau is commencing. During the match, the Left Police Bureau was short of players, and Won-Hae asked Chae-Ok to participate. Chae-Ok was discovered by Jo Chi-Oh, who got angry and offended that a woman is playing in the game. Chae-Ok refuses to kneel and ask for forgiveness since in her opinion, she has not done anything wrong. The Left Police Bureau and the Right Police Bureau get into a brawl, where several of Jo Chi-Oh's men got severely injured.

Back at the police station, Commander Yoon learns of the incident and prepares to bear the responsibility.

Chae-Ok, fearing that the incident will cause harm to Yoon's future, goes to see Jo Chi-Oh alone. Jo Chi-Oh

offers to let go of the incident in exchange of her life. Yoon arrives at the scene and tries to save Chae-Ok

by promising to resign, but Jo Chi-Oh refuses to sheathe his sword and offers to cut Chae-Ok's right arm instead. Chae-Ok suffers a deep cut and faints.

Yoon tends to Chae-Ok's wound and asks her if it hurts. Chae-Ok says yes in which Yoon replied that it hurts him too. Yoon tells Chae-Ok that before she became his servant, she was like a sister to him, so she shouldn't hurt him again. Chae-Ok's eyes start to produce tears and says that a slave like her cannot be his sister. The likes of her should not be an obstacle to Yoon's dreams. Yoon doesn't wish to fulfill a dream that will sacrifice Chae-Ok, and he apologized for being too harsh earlier.

At the police station, the police force has recovered conuterfeit money and Chae-Ok was instructed to deliver the counterfeits to another agency.

Chae-Ok gets on a boat with other passengers. A man carrying his sick child and his wife begs for room on the boat. Chae-Ok steps off to make room, and Jang Sung-Baek (wearing a hat that conceals his face) and his assistant, Soo-Myung, stepped off the boat as well. A government official then jumps on the boat and refuses to give up his seat, saying he has important things to do. Chae-Ok was about to use force on the government official but Jang Sung Baek stopped her, and together have devised another way of getting the official out of the boat.

Soo-myung tells Sung-Baek that he (referring to Chae-Ok) seems like a man of justice, and should be recruited by them. Sung-Baek tells her it is not a man, but a woman, leaving Soo-Myung confused.

Chae-Ok rests at a tavern where the hostess conspired with her husband, Ma Chook Ji, to steal Chae-Ok's luggage. Chae-Ok's luggage, which contains the counterfeit coins was stolen.

Damo Korean Drama (다모)

Damo (다모/조선 여형사 다모) is a 2003 MBC TV drama set in the Joseon Dynasty about a young tea servant, Chae-Ohk, who also serves as an undercover agent for the Left Police Bureau, under the command of Commander Hwang Bo Yoon (whom she owes her life to). While investigating a money counterfeiting case, she unexpectedly becomes drawn to Jang Sung Baek, the leader of the rebel group.
