Rich Man, Poor Woman Episode 1 Synopsis | Rich Man, Poor Woman Episode 1 Summary | Rich Man, Poor Woman Episode 1 Recap
Hyuga Toru is a young CEO of an IT firm, Next Innovation. He is a junior high school drop out but due to his ingenuity and luck, he built a very successful company worth billions. He plans to collaborate with the government for his next big project - to compile a personal file for everyone. He claims it will make things such as getting pension as easy as one click. He is also looking for his mother who left him at an early age.
Enter Sawaki Chihiro, a young woman about to graduate from Tokyo University but lacking self confidence. Despite being very smart (and probably has photographic memory), she can't land a job. Her friends try to cheer her up and asked her to apply in the upcoming recruitment day of Next Innovation, after one of them has seen a magazine article about Hyuga Toru.
Upon entering the recruitment area, Hyuga Toru began to give a speech about the company. He also started to talk to some of the job seekers. He asked Sawaki Chihiro how many job offers has she got. Saying that she got none, Hyuga said for all those who got less than 2 job offers to leave. As Sawaki prepared to leave, Hyuga pointed her out as a prime example/victim of the education system and old beliefs. Sawaki snapped and started to tell facts about the company in a fast speed. Hyuga lauded her rebellious spirit, but remains unimpressed with her smarts and asks for her name. When Sawaki Chihiro says her name, Hyuga becomes dazed, and told her he will remember her name but he may forget her face. Sawaki Chihiro is the name of Hyuga's mother.
The next day, Sawaki Chihiro got a call from Next Innovation, asking her to come to the office. Upon arriving, she was amazed by the hustle and the atmosphere inside the office. Hyuga personally welcomed her, and greeted her by her name, much to the surprise of the employees. Inside his office, Hyuga told her she wanted to hire her for 48 hours. They were meeting an important person for the census-for-all thing tomorrow, and this person likes to talk with people who's obviously done their research on the topic . Hyuga gave her a stack of list of facts and figures to memorize to impress this person tomorrow because she will pretend to have developed the software for compiling the official documents of the people.
At Hyuga's house, he and Asahi Kosuke (his start up partner) are arranging a newly bought refrigerator. It seems that Hyuga has some little quirks in his personality. It took him several years to pick furniture and appliances for his house, that's why it is still mostly empty. After placing the refrigerator in the middle of nowhere, they began to talk about their early days. Kosuke said that he knows Hyuga can do anything. The door bell rang, it was Kosuke's sister, Yoko. She will start working at the newly opened restaurant on New Innovation as a chef. She also seems to like Hyuga, or at least partly interested.
The next day, Chihiro donned her job hunting outfit (black suit, skirt, and black shoes), much to Hyuga's disgust. He told her she was pretending to be an elegant and successful 28 year old employee, not someone who obviously doesn't have a job experience yet. After the obligatory makeover montage, Kosuke marvelled at how Chihiro transformed into a princess.
At the party, the important person was impressed by Chihiro. Chihiro has also proven her worth by saving Hyuga when he can't remember the name of a minister. However, at the end of the party Chihiro got over complacent and said something over the line, offending the important person they were all trying to impress. Hyuga shouted at her in front of the other employees, with Kosuke stopping him. Hyuga stormed out of the room.
As Chihiro prepares to leave, Kosuke catches up with her and cheers her up. Meanwhile, Hyuga sees the black "job hunting" shoes that Chihiro left on the car. He remembers the moments they had together and says he should have at least praised her a little, and turns the car around. He sees Chihiro and Kosuke together, with Chihiro smiling and getting in on Kosuke's car. He looks disappointed and leaves again.
In the car, Kosuke asks Chihiro that she can eat whatever she likes because she deserves it. Then, he drops a bomb by asking Chihiro who is she anyway. Chihiro looks shocked. Looks like Kosuke did some investigating on Chihiro, and found out it wasn't her real name. Who is Sawaki Chihiro anyway, and how does she know that by using that name, Hyuga will remember her.

Quick Thoughts:
Apart from being impressed by how fast Ishihara Satomi (Sawaki Chihiro) can speak, the cliffhanger at the end was really nice. However, I'm still not so sure if this drama will keep my interest for long.
